6 Tips to Become Disciplined

We know that discipline is what delivers real results. But for many of us it is difficult to be disciplined. Our parents and life did not teach us to be disciplined when we were young and now as adults we run from the pain of discipline.

I don’t blame you. I learned how to be disciplined early in life. Life gave me many tasks for me to be able to survive and make it in life. However, I fail in other parts of my life such as caring about others. I learned to care about others later in life.

So I know that we all fail in something and learn to be good in other things early in life. I am grateful I learned from God and mentors the importance of caring about others. But this is something I was not taught when I was younger.

Now it is not too late for you to become disciplined and achieve many of your goals that you have left halfway through. It will take time and effort to become disciplined, but once you are disciplined it will be part of your life and you don’t have to think about it anymore.

If you are interested in learning how to become disciplined, I am going to give you 6 tips you can use.

Create a habit

Everyone follows habits that are learned by our parents, or our environment. They are either conscious or unconscious habits. Just like those habits, discipline is also a habit. Once you have adopted it, it is difficult to look the other way.

You are going to relapse when you start to become disciplined and you would want to go back to the old habit, but if you continue practicing being disciplined, one day it will just be part of you. For example, I have members who missed sessions often in the beginning of their program. But as they become more given to the program, they start showing up more constantly and they become disciplined. So don’t give up.

Think long term

There is no way you are going to do something if you don’t think about the reward. When it is about achieving something worthwhile, then it will take time. Know that results will come. This is like investing money, becoming a leader or toning your body. You don’t know when exactly it will happen, but if you continue with the discipline of doing the necessary things to invest, becoming a leader or toning your body, it happens. There are no shortcuts for these achievements.

Think about the consequences

If you started a program to lose weight and tone your body, it’s because it matters to you. I don’t know what happened that opened your eyes to a better life. But you know that where you are is not better than where you are going. If you think about how you feel and the pain your old habits caused in your life, you are going to feel motivated to continue. For example, if you are tired of buying bigger clothes or not able to keep up with your friends when playing volleyball, then you need to change and pay the price of being disciplined to lose weight, unless you want to continue buying bigger clothes and not caring about playing with your friends. Keep the pain of changing present.

Don’t pay attention on how you feel

Human beings are emotional and most often we make decisions based on how we are feeling. If you plan to be disciplined and get results, doing things the way you feel is a waste of time. You are never going to make it. This is the biggest reason why people fall short of their goals. If you don’t lift weights because something hurts, if you don’t go for a run because you feel tired, if you eat sugar because you feel sad and so on, your emotions dictate your actions. If you go with what you know instead of how you feel, you will become disciplined and get results.  Ignore your feelings and just do it.

Be okay with pain and get out of your comfort zone

We like to continue doing what we feel familiar with even though it is painful. So you are practicing pain already. Why not feel the pain by getting out of your comfort zone? Embrace pain and create a new habit that will benefit your life. In this case if it is losing weight and toning your body, take the pain of becoming disciplined by exercising and eating healthy. Start loving the pain. There are no results if there is no pain.

Think that is only part of your life

Being disciplined gives you freedom. If you are disciplined with your health, you have freedom of disease and you are physically independent. If you are disciplined with your money, you have freedom to do what you love to do; you have the freedom to travel and to simply not worry about money. If you are disciplined with your profession, you have the freedom of no competition. You will always be number one. Discipline is part of your life and it gives you freedom. You need to be disciplined in what you do to have freedom in other parts of your life. You practice discipline to have freedom.

So you are not always disciplined in your day. When you are exercising, you are disciplined. But when you are not exercising you enjoy the benefits of exercising. Therefore, you only need to be disciplined for one hour to enjoy 23 hours of your day. Discipline is only part of your life, not your whole life.

Put these 6 tips to become disciplined into practice today if your goal is to achieve your goals in life.
