How Do I Stay Motivated? The Real Story Behind 27 Years of Fitness Discipline
The First Time I Walked Into a Gym
I still remember when a friend invited me to lift weights for the first time. I was 18 — curious but unimpressed. The gym didn’t spark anything inside me back then.
A year later, while working as an arborist, everything changed. My boss was strong, lean, and confident — the kind of man who stood out. Watching him carry heavy blocks with ease, I couldn’t help but think, I want to be like him.
When I asked if his body came from our hard work, he smiled and said, “No, I built this at the gym.” That same day, he invited me to join him.
This time, I was ready. He taught me a simple routine, and the very next day — even without him — I went back to the gym. From that moment, my fitness journey began.

When Motivation Becomes a Lifestyle
People often tell me they’re amazed by my commitment — by how hard I train or how focused I seem. They ask, “Are you training for a fight? A competition?”
The truth is, I’m not. I simply love challenging my body and my mind. But I didn’t realize that my level of motivation wasn’t common until I became a personal trainer and health coach. That’s when I saw how many people struggle not with exercise itself — but with staying consistent.
It’s been 27 years, and I’ve never stopped. I still train hard, still learn, and still challenge myself every day.
My First Motivation Wasn’t Deep — But It Worked

When I first started, my motivation was simple — I wanted to look good. I wanted to attract attention, to stand out, and to impress women.
It might sound superficial, but that desire lit a fire in me. It got me into the gym. It got me moving. It gave me the discipline I needed to start.
Over time, my reasons changed. Today, I train to stay young, strong, and independent for my wife and daughter. My wife is 11 years younger, and I want to keep up with her energy. I train because I want to control my mind, stay sharp, and age with power — not weakness.
Consistency Creates Transformation
For nearly three decades, I’ve stayed consistent — missing workouts only for recovery or short vacations. That discipline built strong neural pathways in my brain. Just like bad habits can control you, good habits can shape you into your best self.
Consistency creates momentum. Momentum builds identity. And once your identity is tied to movement, exercise becomes effortless. It’s no longer a decision — it’s who you are.
That’s the secret behind every lasting body transformation and weight loss success story at Custom Body Fitness in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Find Your Burning “Why”
If you want to stay motivated, you must find a powerful reason to change. Your “why” might start superficial — and that’s okay. What matters is that it moves you to take action.
Once you start seeing results, your reasons will grow deeper: better health, more energy, confidence, and peace of mind. With consistency, you’ll rewire your brain and create automatic success habits that no obstacle can break.
The Key to Staying Motivated
Start with a spark. Let your first reason — even if it’s small — drive you forward.
Evolve your motivation. As you grow, find new reasons to continue your journey.
Build consistency. Discipline creates neural strength, and neural strength builds unstoppable momentum.

No one stays motivated by chance. Motivation is built, one day at a time, through vision, purpose, and persistence.
At Custom Body Fitness, we’ve seen it again and again — from Glenwood Springs to Basalt, Aspen, and Carbondale, CO. When you start with your “why,” transformation isn’t temporary — it’s for life.
