What I Learned About Weight Loss and Health From Zuzu Karen Ziemer Armes

After more than 15 years of helping people lose weight, tone their bodies, and transform their lives, I have learned something very important: people do not change because they receive information. People change because they find a reason powerful enough to take action.

At Custom Body Fitness, I have found that once people discover why they want to transform their bodies and become fully committed to that goal, the rest becomes much easier. They begin changing their eating habits, improving their mindset, exercising consistently, and addressing the lifestyle factors that may be holding them back.

Even though I have helped many people achieve incredible transformations, I never stop learning. I am always looking for new information and ideas that align with the values we teach at Custom Body Fitness.

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Karen "Zuzu" Ziemer Armes, and I learned several valuable insights that can help people improve their health and support their weight-loss journey.

Zuzu is a holistic health educator, author, and speaker known for her practical, science-backed approach to helping people restore and sustain vibrant health. She has presented more than 2,500 seminars, authored four health books, and guided thousands of people through transformative health education programs.

She is the co-founder of Holistic Health Educators and Lilly Fields Retreat Center, where she helps people learn about gut health, cellular health, sustainable energy, longevity, and overall wellness.

I can honestly say that our conversation was fascinating. Zuzu is passionate about helping people take control of their health and believes strongly in educating people so they can make informed decisions about their well-being.

During our interview, we discussed topics such as gut health, chronic disease prevention, healthy aging, and weight loss. For this article, I want to focus specifically on the lessons I learned about weight loss and body transformation.

1. Pay Attention to Your Thyroid Health

One of the first topics Zuzu discussed was the importance of thyroid function.

The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, energy production, and many other functions in the body. If thyroid function is compromised, losing weight can become much more challenging.

Zuzu emphasized the importance of supporting thyroid health through proper nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, and working with qualified healthcare professionals to identify potential issues. She believes that addressing the root causes of health challenges is often more effective than simply managing symptoms. Also, she mentions that medication is not the solution.

2. Sleep Is One of the Most Powerful Weight-Loss Tools

Many people focus on exercise and nutrition while completely ignoring sleep.

According to Zuzu, quality sleep plays a major role in hormone balance, recovery, metabolism, energy levels, and appetite regulation.

She recommends aiming for 7–8 hours of quality sleep each night and creating healthy bedtime habits. Stop watching TV and stop browsing on the phone 2 hours before sleeping, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, and creating a relaxing evening routine can all contribute to better sleep quality. Zuzu said that it is important to go to sleep with the sunset (before 10 pm) and wake up with the sunrise.

As a trainer, I completely agree with this. I have seen many members struggle with weight loss simply because they were not getting enough quality sleep.

3. Move Your Body Every Day

Exercise was another topic we discussed in depth.

Zuzu believes movement is one of the most effective ways to improve overall health. Exercise supports circulation, metabolism, energy production, and many of the body's natural processes.

While exercise will help you lose weight by burning calories, it will also help you detox your body and help you lose weight by getting rid of many harmful toxins.

At Custom Body Fitness, we see this every day. People who consistently exercise not only lose weight more successfully, but they also have more energy, feel stronger, manage stress better, and improve their quality of life.

You do not have to become a marathon runner or spend hours in the gym. Walking, strength training, hiking, swimming, cycling, and other forms of exercise can all contribute to better health and weight loss.

The key is consistency.

4. Choose Foods That Support Your Goals

Zuzu also emphasized the importance of nutrient-dense foods.

She recommends focusing on foods such as:

  • Leafy green vegetables

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Whole foods

  • Fiber-rich foods

  • Nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables

At Custom Body Fitness, we teach a similar philosophy. The foods you choose every day either move you closer to your goals or further away from them.

Healthy eating does not need to be complicated. The more whole, natural foods you eat, the easier it becomes to support your health and weight-loss goals.

The Gut-Health Connection

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was discussing the connection between gut health and overall wellness.

Zuzu explained the importance of the microbiome and how gut health can influence digestion, immune function, energy levels, mental well-being, and overall health.

Research continues to show how important a healthy gut can be for many aspects of physical and mental wellness. Learning more about your digestive health may be an important step in improving your overall quality of life.

Final Thoughts

I can tell that Zuzu is extremely knowledgeable, but what impressed me most was how much she genuinely cares about helping people.

Her message aligns with something I have believed for years: there is no magic pill for health. Real transformation comes from improving your habits, learning about your body, staying active, eating healthy foods, getting quality sleep, and consistently making choices that support your goals.

If you apply even a few of the lessons Zuzu shared during our interview, you may be surprised by how much your health, energy, and body can improve over time.

And remember, lasting transformation is not about perfection. It is about consistently making better choices and continuing to move forward.
