How Do I Tighten Loose Skin? The Truth Most People Don’t Want to Hear

How Do I Tighten Loose Skin? The Truth Most People Don’t Want to Hear

When people come to Custom Body Fitness in Glenwood Springs for their first evaluation, one of the most common things they show me is what they call their “loose skin.” They grab their belly, shake it a little, and say, “Look, this is all loose skin… how do I tighten it?”

But the truth is this: what they’re showing me is not loose skin. It’s still fat.

I prove it by pulling the skin on top of my hand. That is loose skin. What most people have on their stomach is fat sitting right under the skin — soft, jiggly, stubborn fat that hasn’t been burned yet.

And it’s not their fault for being confused.

Why so many people think they have loose skin

Surgeons often tell people they have loose skin — because that’s how they sell surgeries. Surgery is their business. And let’s be blunt. Many surgeons are not in shape themselves, and they don’t truly understand what fat loss looks like on a fit, healthy body.

But I’ve helped hundreds of clients across Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Aspen, New Castle, and the entire Roaring Fork Valley lose massive amounts of weight. And you know what? Almost none of them ended up with real loose skin. Why?  Because what they thought was “loose skin” was actually fat.

How to know if it’s REALLY loose skin

I always tell people: “If you think it’s loose skin, prove me wrong.” Here are the numbers:

  • Women need to be under 20% body fat

  • Men need to be under 11%

If you’re above that, what you think is skin is still fat. Real loose skin only happens after you reach those low levels of body fat. The problem is that the weight-loss surgery industry benefits from people believing the opposite.

The truth nobody wants to hear

Getting to 20% or 11% body fat is NOT easy. It requires discipline, consistency, and a real lifestyle change — not shortcuts. You cannot lose that last layer of fat if you are not serious about:

  • Eating real, whole foods

  • Cutting out processed junk

  • Exercising correctly and consistently

  • Staying patient
  • Tracking your progress

This is why very few people ever reach that level. And it’s also why people never need skin removal surgery.

So how do you “tighten loose skin”?

Here’s the real answer:

1. Get to your ideal body fat percentage

  • Women: below 20%

  • Men: below 11%

Until you hit those numbers, you don’t know if your skin is actually loose.

2. Follow a real fitness program

Not random workouts. A real program that builds muscle, burns fat, and boosts your metabolism.

3. Eat healthy — truly healthy

Not low carb. Not low fat. Not keto. Just whole, real food with no processed garbage.

4. Track your body composition

It’s the only way to know where you’re standing.

5. Hire a professional if possible

This journey is long. You need guidance, accountability, and someone who knows what they’re doing.

The most important reminder

This process takes time. Months. Sometimes years — depending on where you’re starting. But if you commit to the process, tighten your habits, and trust the journey. You won’t need surgery. You’ll tighten your belly the natural way — by getting rid of the fat that’s still under your skin.
