Your Weight Loss Is a Reflection of Your Lifestyle: What I Learned From Dr. Thomas Mitchell
“Your weight loss is a reflection of your lifestyle.”
This is how I relate with Dr. Thomas Mitchell. He and I think similarly, and that made me excited to learn more from this amazing professional during our interview.
Dr. Thomas Mitchell's biography is intense, but I won’t bore you with all his credentials. I know the feeling. I took the freedom to mention just some of Dr. Tom's achievements and experience because I think they are worth knowing.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Mitchell's visibility continues to grow. He is Co-Founder of Cerium Medical and Director of Human Performance for Maxxxforce. He was also featured as a speaker at the 2025 Upside US Sports Tech Summit.
I learned many things from Dr. Tom, and I want to share some of them with you.
Weight Loss Is a Reflection of Your Life Habits
Dr. Tom mentioned during our interview that losing weight is a consequence of changing many habits in your life.
If you start making healthier decisions, weight loss can become a natural consequence of those changes.
This is something I strongly agree with.

Many people look at weight loss as if it were one single thing they need to do. They want to find the perfect diet, the perfect exercise, or the perfect supplement.
But your body reflects what you repeatedly do. If you eat poorly, don't exercise, sleep poorly, and live a sedentary lifestyle, changing one small thing may not be enough.
When you start changing your lifestyle and developing healthier habits, your body can start changing as well.
Exercise Helps You Build a Sustainable Lifestyle
Dr. Tom believes exercise is important for living a long life. But he also emphasized something I really liked.
It is not only about living longer. It is about living better.
You don't want to simply survive for many years. You want to enjoy those years. You want to be able to move, travel, play with your children or grandchildren, participate in activities you enjoy, and remain physically independent.
Exercise plays a big role in helping you maintain that physical independence. This is one of the reasons I believe exercise should not be something you do temporarily to lose weight.
Weight Loss Is Not Only About Calories In and Calories Out
Dr. Tom understands that weight loss is more complicated than simply counting calories.
Of course, energy balance matters. But there can also be physiological, behavioral, emotional, environmental, and lifestyle factors that influence someone's ability to lose or maintain weight.
For example, there can be physiological issues that deserve professional evaluation.
Hormonal and Metabolic Factors
Hormones play important roles in metabolism, appetite, energy regulation, and many other processes related to body weight. If you believe something physiological may be interfering with your progress, it can be worth discussing it with an appropriately qualified functional medicine healthcare professional.
Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation is another area that can affect overall health.
Your eating habits, lifestyle, sleep, stress, and other factors can influence inflammation and your overall health. This is another reason why I don't believe your weight-loss program should only be about stepping on a scale.
You should be working on becoming healthier overall.
Digestive Health
Dr. Tom also talked about digestion and how important it is to understand what is happening inside your body. Your digestive system plays an important role in how your body processes the food you eat.
If you are experiencing persistent digestive problems or other symptoms that concern you, this is something you should discuss with a qualified functional medicine healthcare professional.
How Can You Know If Something Physiological Is Affecting Your Weight Loss?
Dr. Tom recommends working with a qualified functional medicine healthcare professional who can evaluate whether there are physiological factors that may be affecting your health or your ability to lose weight.
And one thing Dr. Tom emphasized is to be careful with unnecessary and expensive protocols. More testing or more complicated treatments are not automatically better.
Find someone you trust, ask questions, understand what is being recommended, and make informed decisions about your health.
Find Value in Your Health

Dr. Tom said something that I think many people need to understand:
Your health is an investment.
If you want to be healthy, lose weight, and stay in shape, you need to see the value in your health. You are going to spend money on your health.
You may spend money on a gym, a personal trainer, exercise equipment, healthier food, healthcare, or other things that support your health. But you are also making decisions every day about where you spend your money and what you put into your body.
You have a choice. You can invest in your health, or you can continue investing in habits that work against your health.
The decision is yours.
Two Important Keys to Losing Weight and Getting in Shape
Dr. Tom said that two things he sees producing results are consistency and consciousness.
I couldn't agree more.
1. Be Consistent
You cannot expect your body to transform if you practice healthy habits only when you feel motivated.
You need to continue. You need to exercise consistently. You need to work on your eating habits consistently. You need to make healthier decisions consistently. You need to give your body enough time to respond.

2. Be Conscious
You also need to become aware of what you are doing.
Pay attention to what you eat. Pay attention to how active you are. Pay attention to how much you are exercising. Pay attention to your habits. Pay attention to the decisions you are making every day.
Sometimes people don't need more information. They need to become more conscious of what they are already doing.
Dr. Tom's Weight Loss Tip: Find a Mentor
One of Dr. Tom's final recommendations was to hire a mentor to help you lose weight and improve your health.
I strongly agree with this.
You don't have to figure everything out by yourself. There are books, podcasts, articles, professionals, coaches, trainers, doctors, and many other resources available to help you learn.
A good mentor can help you avoid mistakes, understand what you are doing, stay accountable, and keep moving forward when things become difficult.
Your Health Is Your Responsibility
If I had to summarize this entire interview in one sentence, it would be this:
Your health is your responsibility. You are responsible for the decisions you make every day. You are responsible for your eating habits. You are responsible for how active you are. You are responsible for seeking help when you need it. And you are responsible for changing your lifestyle if you want different results.

Losing weight is not simply about finding a diet that works for a few weeks. Transforming your body is not simply about exercising for a few months. It is about changing your lifestyle and developing habits that you can continue practicing for years.
If you need help, seek it. Find a professional you trust. Find a mentor. Get educated. Ask questions. And then put what you learn into practice.
Your body is a reflection of the life you are living.
